There is no dearth of kids clothing companies these days. Parents can find all kinds of styles, shapes, and cuts for their little ones. The new advent of kids’ fashion is a far cry from the past where pink and blue were the norm. On the forefront of the change within the industry is Zutano, a Vermont-based designer of children’s clothing, nursery bedding, décor, toys and furniture.

Zutano was founded over 25 years ago by Uli and Michael Belenky after their first daughter, Sofia, was born. The company started in their New York City apartment and has evolved into one of the most beloved and influential brands in children’s fashion and nursery décor.

Zutano’s success is powerfully connected to its inspiration from children all over the world and is committed to celebrating the diversity of all children, creating exceptional, innovative, and versatile products. Available at more than 1,500 gift and specialty boutiques, retailers, and e-tailers worldwide, the Zutano brand features a combination of unique product designs and cuts, as well as high quality fabrics that are made in Macau, in a family-owned factory that has been their production partner since the company began.

The Zutano brand is also know for their incredible ‘Bring Your Baby to Work’ program. Through this program employees can bring their children to work with them for up to 12 months. This not only promotes and encourages parent-baby bonding, it also allows parents not to be stressed and feel conflicted about having to leave their child to go back to work. Zutano believes that this helps with a positive mindset, overall health, and productivity.

As Michael Belenky noted when we spoke: “[i]n today’s stressful world, with both parents working, it is often difficult to juggle work and family life while maintaining the quality of both.” He added, “[w]e’ve discovered that when employees are supported at home, they perform better at work and are happier about being here.  Mothers who have the opportunity to work alongside their child are able to focus more on their job without worrying about the welfare of their little ones in daycare.”

For parents who choose to use childcare, Zutano reimburses a percentage of their approved childcare costs for the same twelve-month period (for safety reasons, not every employee’s position can be tailored to accommodate an infant).  Zutano also offers new parents scheduling flexibility, easing the stress of squeezing in all of those post and pre-natal appointments and general doctor visits.

With 33 full-time employees, Zutano is still small enough to feel like a large family.  The result of such care and cooperation is a fashionably successful company that is breaking new ground to prove that it is possible to maintain a full-time job while keeping your newest family member close to heart.

Zutano’s garments start at newborn sizing which has inspired the company to continually identify ways to give back and honor the children of the world.  They also believe that business has a responsibility to appropriately manage and protect the environment and community through respectful holistic practices locally as well as globally.  Zutano supports an array of programs which include educational enrichment for children, reproductive rights for women, fighting childhood hunger, bettering healthcare, regional scholarship funds, breastfeeding education and clothing drives. Recently, Zutano was the first company to sponsor Vermont-based Mamava, a groundbreaking, free-standing pod that provides a safe and comfortable space for mothers to pump or nurse.

Zutano now has successful licensing partnerships that have helped bring the brand’s aesthetic to life in nursery furniture, décor, toys and plush.  Recently, Zutano launched a hugely popular baby swaddle and accessory line created in partnership with aden + anais, as well as a line of plush toys and accessories with DEMDACO.  In addition, Zutano has created a line of modern, colorful cribs and nursery furniture with industry leader Stork Craft, Inc., and a line of wall art and decals with York Wallcoverings, America’s oldest and largest wallpaper manufacturer.

With plans to continually grow and expand, Zutano is a beloved brand that is deeply rooted to provide resources and community to their employees while also providing families with high-quality clothing that will be treasured for years to come.
