The clothing industry is slowly starting to change, with a movement towards greater consciousness and awareness about how our clothing is be produced. This change is reflected by a growing number of clothing companies that are spending the extra money and taking the extra care to carefully source and produce their garments. At Little Swappies, we are excited about these positive changes that will help consumers to better understand the stories that are contained within our fabrics. It is hard not to be inspired by the increase in savvy consumers who choose to shop consciously. Education is the key to lessen the disconnect of where our purchases come from and how they are produced, as well as allowing us to better understand the makers, designers, and innovators behind our clothing labels.
One such company that is doing their part to integrate the stories behind their fabrics and their makers is Masala Baby. Created by Dipali Patwa in 2010, with a goal of creating “modern, eclectic, stylish yet wearable clothing for infants, toddlers, and kids,” Masala Baby focuses on ethically sourcing their materials, while in the process creating a gorgeous and whimsical line for kids.
Designed for kids 3 months old to 10 years old, the Maslababy line includes in its collection staples like dresses, skirts, tunics, hoods, pants, tees, bodysuits, shirts and accessories. Everything is inspired by bold colors like saffron, clove brown, raani pink and turmeric yellow as a homage to its Indian roots.
While chatting with Dipali, we were inspired by how she uses her brand to support and employ women-operated and owned factories. This includes taking the time to source fabrics exclusively from India. Their local artisans craft their garments using natural materials, as well as traditional production methods like hand looms, block prints, hand screens, hand embroidery and applique. This level of detail is reflected in their stunning and vibrant pieces.
The company also recently launched an organic pajama line with a beautiful range of patterns and prints – all of which are made from 100% organic cotton. Intertwining style and substance inspires us all to shop more consciously.
You can purchase the entire Masala Baby collection online, but we are thrilled by the opportunity to partner with Masala Baby at our upcoming Cleanse Your Closet’ Swap on January 24 in Williamsburg. Attendees will be able to meet the Masala Baby team in person and shop their line at up to 80% OFF! Masala Baby will also be raffling 10 sets of pajamas ($45 value) at the event. Hope to see you there!
