With all the talk of presents and parties and getting, the end of the year can leave you feeling dizzy in excess. Right before the new year, we did a major cleaning to get rid of our old items. This included stuff that the kids either didn’t play with anyone or items that they outgrew. I had enough of stuffing the closets, and started to load up bags and bags of clothes, books, stuffed animals for donation. I then looked to my own closet, that was also stuffed to the brim, and sorted out what I don’t use anymore and loaded up bags of shoes, clothes and books. I then asked the kids to pick 3 things that they wanted to donate. Even though I loaded up a lot of their old items, I also wanted them to understand the value of giving back and understand that there was no need to hold onto items that they didn’t even use.
After that we loaded up our car, and made our way to our local Salvation Army and the Goodwill. We also had some baby gear that we donated to Little Essentials and we have another bag of stuff for Little Swappies and their event in NYC next week (see below).
Not only about out with the old and in with the new, donating your old items is a great way to pass along your items to those that can both use them and get better use out of them. It is also a great way to clean up mess and start the new year off minimally. But more importantly, it is about teaching our kids the value of giving back, community, and not living with excess.
Upcoming Donation Event in NYC:
