One day when our daughter was about 6 months old, I went through her closet, and realized there were adorable outfits - some brand-new with tags still on them- that she had already outgrown. I knew that other mothers must be in a similar situation and thought we could all benefit by bringing our community together to swap the items our children no longer use for items that we need.
I have learned that you don’t have to save everything to preserve the memories, and it’s natural to want to find a strong connection to anyone who might be receiving your children’s beautiful outgrown clothing and discarded yet barely used books and toys.
My goal for Little Swappies is to give parents a feeling of connection to their community, knowing that every single item brought to an event is going to a wonderful new home, where it will be used and appreciated by another lucky family. I also want people to feel good knowing that other families are doing the same for them.
As a parent I think that the reduce, reuse, and recycle ideology hits home even more because it is clear how the choices that we make today affect the world for our children and future generations. Even small actions like our swaps, can have a huge environmental impact if we all start doing our share.
